Hot Tub Won't Fit Through the Gate? Access Solutions That Actually Work

Measure first: the numbers that decide the plan

A standard 4–6 person hot tub is 78–84 inches square and 33–36 inches tall. To come out whole, the narrowest point along the entire removal path needs to be at least 36 inches wide, ideally 42+ for turns. Include gate posts, downspouts, HVAC units, and stair railings when you measure.

Option 1: Temporary fence panel removal

The fastest fix. Most residential wood fences have a section that can be unscrewed in 15 minutes and re-installed in 20. If you have a vinyl or chain-link fence, panels usually pop off with two people. Our crew handles this for you and re-installs before leaving.

Option 2: On-site disassembly

When there's no fence to remove — or landscaping blocks a wider route — we cut the tub into sections with reciprocating saws. A 4-piece cut fits through a 30-inch gate. A 6-piece cut fits through almost any residential opening. Adds 45–90 minutes to the job.

Option 3: Crane or boom-truck lift over the house

For backyards with no side access — common on Sevier County mountain lots and older Knoxville neighborhoods — we sub-contract a small crane or boom truck to lift the tub over the roof to a waiting trailer. Adds $300–$800 depending on reach and site prep. Almost always cheaper than tearing down a fence and rebuilding it.

Option 4: Roll-off from a second-story deck

Elevated decks require a section of railing to come off, a plywood ramp built out to the yard, and a controlled slide down to a truck. It's the trickiest scenario and requires the most experienced crew — but it's usually faster than a crane if the deck is under 12 feet high.
